Glock “Family” Pistols Offer Versatility
Glock Pistols are offered in a “family” of Full-size, Compact and Sub-compact in 4 calibers (not including Law Enforcement Only models):
- 9mm: Models 17, 19, 26
- .357 SIG: Models 31, 32, 33
- .40 S&W: Models 22, 23, 27
- .45 G.A.P.: Models 37, 38, 39
The ones pictured above and featured in the video below are the 9mm family.
First off, no handgun is of any value if it is not reliable or you cannot shoot it well; with me I have found Glocks to be very reliable, they fit my hand as well or better than any other brand of firearm and I can shoot them well.
It doesn’t matter how cool a gun looks if it doesn’t pass muster on the above criteria.
Now, I totally get that many people think Glock pistols are ugly, personally I like their looks. Clean and efficient, not a lot of bells and whistles, knobs, gears, levers or antennas to get caught on anything. Get a grip, take aim, press the trigger, they go bang…
Can the same be said of other handguns? Yep, sure can.
Yet how many of those “other” handguns come in a “family” of three sizes, with magazines that can be used with any gun in the family smaller than what the magazine was intended for?
Ok, now how many can you easily remove the baseplate to add a pinky extension – like a Pearce Grip Extension, a “+2” baseplate to give you two more rounds capacity, or buy a “monster magazine” that holds – in the case of 9mm – 31+2 rounds for a total of 34 rounds in the gun (33 in the magazine with +2 extension plus one in the pipe)?
We are now likely down to a pretty small group of handguns…
So how many of these can all 3 handguns in the “family” use the same holsters? Holsters are EXPENSIVE as you probably have found out; look what they charge even for a simple plastic paddle holster these days. A leather shoulder rig? OUCH!

Note: Any real leather holster system probably requires a short amount of break-in work.
Glock Pistols: Generation 2 vs Finger Grooves
In the original take of the video I demonstrated how the finger grooves on the model 26 don’t fit my fingers, and while I have large hands my fingers are not fat. Grooves are still too small. I had to re-shoot the video and forgot to illustrate that issue.
Thus, despite being like a “piece of lumber” according to some, I am quite happy with the Generation 2 Glock pistols – I do kind of miss the rail on the front but let’s face it: I’m not adding an expensive light and buying all new holsters anyway.
According to one expert shooter, those finger grooves fit about 10% of the population, they just happen to fit him. If that statistic is even close to true it makes you wonder why gun manufacturers do it other than the “cool looking” factor (which is HUGE, I know…)
